Yay for Costco
Ok, yes, they are big business and I'm sure they have forced out smaller independent stores. But at least they treat their workers right with decent pay and health benefits. They even allow unions!

What's striking about the article are all the quotes from business consultants who are just interested in short term profits and who criticize Costco for being too kind to employees and spending too much on them. What's wrong with treating people like human beings instead of costs of doing business? I hope the consultants burn in hell.

Jean, thank you SO much for posting that article. I'd always assumed that Costco was just another soulsucking big box. I'm definitely going to start shopping there. I know they're not perfect, but at least they're not evil.
Which is just in time, because I recently decided to quit shopping at Target, which treats its workers very poorly. You may scoff, but I used to shop at Target constantly. I'm pretty damn broke, and they do offer pretty low prices. But I've been increasingly unable to justify the keen deals I get when I think about how terribly the workers are treated/paid.
I live in a Target superzone--there are three different stores within a 10 minute drive--and I've had scores of friends don the red-and-khaki. Almost all have quit within a year--the job is just not worth the pay.
I'm quite happy living without Target, but it's not easy. I seriously have no idea where to go to buy certain things. Where can I get a pair of headphones? A set of plastic hangers? A make-up mirror? All the of the cool indie stores are a prohibitevly gas-sucking drive away. So I'm still listening to headphones with only one side operational.
