This was a post from my blog "The Liberal Side of Life" at http://therealpolitik.blogspot.com/. Starts out with talking about homosexuality, but gets into my feelings on the Iraq debacle.

Cast some stones, Religious Right

The more I think about the issue of homosexuality, the more I become inflamed by the ignorant and Bible-thumping ways of many of the Religious Right. Look, I'm the first to admit that in the Bible it is clearly stated, in Leviticus 18:22, that "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." So we're basically told it's a sin. That's fine. But it's the blatant moral hypocrisy of the Religious Right that gets at me. Jesus said "Love thy neighbor" no matter what, and the blatant homophobia and hatred the Religious Right often acts with does not correspond with that important idea. Furthermore, the most important words I think Jesus ever spoke, besides on the cross, were these:

"He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone." John 8:7

Since I am fairly certain that Jesus never points out a degree of sin, one being worse than another, we're all guilty here. So the concentration on homosexuality allows all sorts of other horribly wrong things to fall through the cracks, kind of like...

Is there anything more morally shocking and horrible than sending young men to die for reasons that proved to be incorrect and wrong? There's not much I can think of that is. Yet this administration has done just that with the preemptive war in Iraq. Now look at it. More than thousand Americans have died and for what? A helpless democracy in a place that didn't show much interest in it to begin with; otherwise they might've rebelled against Saddam in the first place. Bush wants the Iraqi national election to go on as planned, even when it looks as if a lot of people may be unable to vote safely. All of this really gets to me because I believe that telling your soldiers that they are going to fight in a place that really threatens their country when it ranks way down there in direct threats is something absolutely terrible. I mean, shoot. If we're going to actually attack some place that might actually threaten us, why the hell didn't we invade North Korea? That has to be numero uno on the list of greatest potential threats to U.S. security outside of nationless terrorism. But see, that would've taken more effort and would've been a lot riskier than invading Iraq. Of course, now we see that there are NO WMDs. Bush & Company searched for evidence, anything to get the American people scared shitless of Saddam and his supposed danger to American security. George Tenant, who was recently awarded the Freedom Medal for his, (ahem), "great" work in counterterrorism, told Bush invading Iraq was a "slam dunk." We, the American people, were told Saddam was harboring terrorists. So we invaded. Then when it became apparent that, uh, there weren't actually any WMDs and that Al Qaeda was not up to jack shit in Iraq, Bush turned WMDs into WMD-developing programs. When that looked stupid, he got away with saying down maybe 10 years down the line, Hussein would've been a threat. And Bush still managed to win the election even after he lied to the American people. WHAAAAAA??? Last time I checked, lying to the nation actually qualifies as grounds for impeachment, like Bill Clinton. Then again, Clinton lied about a sexual affair. That didn't get a good thousand Americans and a good hundred thousand Iraqi civilians killed.

So basically, I look at the Republican party and its die-hard supporter, the Religious Right, and I laugh at both of them. They speak of being righteous and all that crap, when in reality the war they backed proved to be a grand error. In comparison, the Religious Right cried foul over Clinton's sexual promiscuousness, but not when 1,000 Americans died without a valid reason. Real damn sensible.

Back in 1971 when I was a proud airman in the US Air Force I was enrolled in a course of training that required me to have a secret security clearence. There was an extensive background check that I was actually surprised I passed since by age 12 I was allready a convicted felon. Grand theft auto. Any how, I show up for school and immediately notice that all of the students weren't American. Some of them were from Iran. Some even from Viet Nam and everybody wore their uniform proudly. That was the first thing about military life that confused me. There were many more to come.Things like weapons being sold from home to Iraqi so that they could defeat Iran. But then we sold weapons to Iran so that they might defeat Iraqi. This, as most of you know was back in the 80's when George senior was boss. The weapons, I have heard were real wmd's. Germs and chemicals and all that nasty stuff that we are all so afraid of now.Did we really have a grudge with Iran and Iraqi or was it genocide. Or did we just simply need a testing ground for these weapons and lab rats just weren't getting it. What ever was going on back then seems to be going on again. Millions of people, mostly with the same skin color, are killing each other at an alarming rate.Think of the problem we would have if they all quit fighting each other and decided to fight us. I would hate to see the wmd's that would have to be pulled out of the closets to win that war. You know the war I mean don't you? The big one. WW3
