Words from James Baldwin

Baldwin helps me understand this country, even when that understanding doesn't make me comfortable.

I drove around today thinking about him, wondering what he would say about this moment in time. I found this quote on a
card I picked up during a wedding anniversary trip to Olema, CA:

"People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster."

You said he wasn’t smart, but he beat you at your own game. You said 40 million people made a mistake in voting, because they didn’t think like you. You say the country is headed in the wrong direction, but the majority wants it to go in that direction. You want to protest to get your views accepted and the popular ones rejected. It makes me wonder what is being thought in schools these days. Many never consider that they live in the greatest nation ever and the people in the red states helped made it that way. You can go to any country in the world including Europe and never find the freedom you enjoy here in the USA. We do need new ideas and intellectual discussion of the issues. We do not need decent when ideas are rejected when the majority or the greater wisdom rejects the ones we have. Just because they are our personal ideas does not make them right. We can be one nation or a divided nation. To become one nation we should work together for the grater, moral, belief and standard of living. We are the flagship of life and we have to be responsible in our decisions.
