MLK, Jr. GWB II, etc.

Well...

Over 30 Mil tuned in for American Idol just to watch on car wreck after another. Laurence Fishburne was right when he said "American Idle"... We are a sad bunch, aren't we? Meanwhile with minimal fanfare, MLK, Jr.'s B-day has come and gone again. Personally, I don't feel any freer today than I felt Monday. I still feel--well, just read my peice on MLK on the site--that's how i still feel about MLK and race, etc.

But all of that is moot, because today is GWB Day. 40 million dollars in a "state" (DC) that has no congressmen to celebrate a guy that only 28% of the 200 million eligble voters voted for. What a country, as Yakov Smirnov once said.

Is it just me or is Joe Biden running these confirmation hearings like a man campaigning for '08? Every question he saks is like 5 minutes long... And what's Barbara Boxer's problem? Can she make a point just once and move on? I can't stand Condi Rice---hate her politics. think she's crazy and a myopic who's stuck in academia and conservative bliss... but i don't like seeing her get bashed by all these suspect, condescending two-faced SOBs who don't have half her qualifications or skills.

Ooh... the simpsons is on. Gotta run. TV. The great pacifier.

thankfully i did manage to miss the inauguration except when i turned on the radio 'cos it was all over the news. i don't understand how people can positively review his inaugural speech when it just sounds like contrived palaver.

here's what i said i would do today:

I am going to treat this week's inauguration the same way I treat my birthday -- I'm going to hide out and hope no one notices, and get used to disappointment. Well, actually I hope to do more than that. The first four years of George W. have taught me that if you allow this administration to do their damage and then go, "See?! The dude sucks!", that a lot of people are still going to vote for him anyway. So I hope that in the next four years the activists, war protestors, and everyday pissed-off citizens who worked so hard to bring about regime change in our 2004 election won't wait until the next election to take action again. Let's organize, people! Don't move to Canada yet!

You hate Condoleeza Rice's politics--yet you hate the senators who "bash" her and criticize her past actions? Come on now, where's the room for criticism? If Boxer and Kerry hadn't asked her the hard questions, wouldn't we criticize them for not taking a stand?

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of white people being overly critical of people of color--or putting "colored folks" in their place. Yet at the same time, Rice needs to be held responsible for actions that do not support or represent the positions of a vast majority of black and brown people in the US.

Am I happy that a black woman was appointed Secretary of State? Of course. But like the late Chicago Sun-Times columnist Vernon Jarrett's position on the Bush I Supreme Court appointment of the Thurgood Marshall replacement--I would rather a white person be Secretary of State than a black person whose politics are out of step with my own.

Aw c'mon, Haj. Aren't you coming down a little hard on American Idol? Where else can a kid come out of nowhere and take a genuine shot at living their dream. Black, white, brown, rich, poor, urban, rural, male, female, advantaged, disadvantaged. It's all even-steven when they step up to the mike.

Pay no attention to the sideshow put on by the judges. They are exploiting the entertainment value for all it's worth. And sure, many of the kids have little or no talent. Yet they line up by the thousands to lay their hearts and souls out there for a shot at fame and fortune.

You've got to admit that America has come a very long way when an unmarried black mom from North Carolina (2004 winner Fantasia Barrino) and an overweight young black man from Alabama (2003 winner Ruben Studdard) can go head-to-head in the finals with Scarlett O'Hara and Opie Taylor, be voted #1 by the youth of America, and become instant millionaires overnight. The kids of this generation are light years ahead of any previous generation when it comes to seeing beyond racial and cultural differences. Cheer up. I'll bet it's one of MLK, Jr's favorite shows.

Criticism's fine and dandy... dandy and fine. or just dandy. whatever "dandy" means.

but my deal is i don't trust poltician's of any color or gender. Once you get to a national stage, you've lied to so many people to get there that you've lost count. And for these guys to act like they're above it all is my main beef. they're as crooked as anything.

And Dr. Rice is a piece of work. She'll with that whole neocon agenda... Somehow money and democracy are gonna fix the world's ills? Didn't the greek and roman empires try this already? didn't the brits?

When are folks gonna learn that ou have to let societies figure otu things for themselves and if you're gonna help people HELP PEOPLE--don't just pick random sides when it suits your agenda.

Unfortunately, that's our foreign policy in a nutshell.
