Power to the People?

Okay, here’s my question so far? Where are the black people in this? It’s about 10:45am, Chicago time and I haven’t seen one single person of color on any of the major networks or any of the cable stations covering this thing. None on Fox. None on NBC or MSNBC. None on CNN or CBS. None on ABC. None on the radio affiliates that I’ve heard. None.

Other than the occasional Juan Williams and Farai Chideya sighting, I haven’t seen a single person darker than a suntan in this whole process. All I’ve seen are the white liberals, white conservatives, white men, white women, old white people young white people, baby boomers and Gen Xers, hipsters and conservatives, liberals and the undecided… All White. And all seemingly content to speak for everyone else as though their opinion is the only one that matters. As if their insights and perspectives are the only ones that matter. As if they’re the only ones qualified to be part of the process.

Come to think of it, that’s probably the one that’s bothered me most this entire election—how both Democrats and Republicans play race in politics. The Democrats seem to mention race the same way many people play the “some of my best friends are black/latino/asian/Native American” card—as proof that they’re somehow more open-minded and evolved than the rest. The Republicans seem to engage in race matters to prove how racists they’re not…

All of this frustrates the hell out of me because as I continuously seen, time and time again in my life, when push comes to shove, everyone reveals their true colors. And today, now that it’s time to vote, now that it’s time to take a stand, now that it’s time to open the doors of democracy to all, it looks like people of color— reporters, voters, etc. have to use the backdoor if they want to get in at all.

I saw lots of Latin people (Domincan and Puerto Rican) at my polling place, but that's my neighborhood repping hard. Actual African Americans? Um ... there was me and my boyfriend, and maybe two others? Plus the NYPD officer doing security.

9 out of 10 blacks are going to vote for the democrat even if they run a dead corpse for office. That's the extent of their involvement and what they will get towards their interest because they won't show any diversity of thought with respect to the issues. The hispanics are catered to because they do.
