Election 2004--Billion$ and Billion$ Spent

Check out this sobering chart on the well over $1 billion spent on congressional and presidential campaigns. Meanwhile, check out the other charts referenced on the left, like top individual contributors to 527s.... on the left, financier George Soros is over $23 mil lighter; on the right, oilman and corporate raider T. Boone Pickens is down $4 mil.

Where's my cut?

Fight fire with fire?

So would it be a good idea for the Left to create its own propaganda machine (like a liberal Fox news channel)? Is that the only way to stay viable -- and win back seats the next election?

Good suggestion, katep. Al Franken is trying it. It takes a long time to build up an audience of faithful listeners and viewers. Consider how long Rush Limbaugh and others have been on radio and TV. It's taken the conservative crazies twenty years or more to get their propaganda machine running well.

There's another problem. These conservative crazies who listen to Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity & Colmes, and others like to hear what these individuals say. They like to hear someone say that all liberals are godless lily-livered cowards, etc., etc., etc. The problem was recognized a long time ago. Liberals believe in granting such as Limbaugh, etc., freedom of speech because that is a liberal principle. Liberals even believe in listening to opposing points of view expressed on the air and on TV. Conservative crazies don't believe in any of that. It is not their principle.

I hope that in time the inconsistencies in the Conservative Crazy view of the world will become obvious to everyone else. When that day comes, a pol like Bush would be laughed into obscurity. If we are going to change minds, we have to do more than speak and write to each other.

Foxnews is in my cycle of cable news channel flipping. I can tell you that conservatives don't view it as conservative, though it's certainly not ANTI-conservative. I would characterize it as very Pro-America though. So if that's the same thing to you then that worries me.
