1st Hispanic is unfortunately the Wrong Hispanic

Bitter and sweet: it seems to be the calling card for the month of november.
We have Alberto Gonzalez as the appointment to Ashcroft's seat.
Yeah!!! = First Hispanic in 80 postings
Boo!!! = Wrong Hispanic (His term as White House counsel is not without controversy, as he fought with Congress to keep the details of Vice President Dick Cheney's energy commission meetings secret and defended the administration's right to detain terrorism suspects indefinitely without formal charges and to deny them access to counsel or to protection from the court system)

Did anyone actually expect Bush to appoint someone who would do the job right, have good values, and not be be an old buddy from Texas?

Of course not....

What a joke.

Typical politics as usual. Did we expect anything else? It's not about values or ideology, it's about helping your buddies...

bigun,
All of my posts have addressed the policy decision by President Bush and his administration over the past four years. Those policies have included taking this country to war illegally his slow degridation of the environment, and given his budget proposals the leading of this country to financial ruinSo bigun these are the facts as I see them. Nothing too positive to report.
But hey I'll give him credit for accepting Ashcroft's resignation.

So just because a Hispanic does not fall to YOUR silly beliefs, leftist ideals, and sides w/Dick Cheney he is not the RIGHT Hispanic? Uff da. Okay, so he's a sellout then right? And YOU're so better than every one else huh? We're not worthy!

beejay,
it's not so much my ideals as the ideals set forth by the world. And literally the world. Mr. Gonzalez has called the stipulations of the Geneva Convention "quaint." One of those stipulations is the banning of torture. Moreover he has recommended for death penalty men and women where there was evidence of mental illness, compelling contrary DNA evidence to the verdict. Whether you are pro or con on the death penalty issue I would imagine we all think that the death penalty if administered would be administered only if we are 100% positive that the man/woman is guilty. Any reasonable doubt and we should stop it from occuring.
I would ask Mr. Gonazalez to ruminate a bit longer on the laws, both national and international before dismissing them ever so quickly with words like "quaint"

Hope you don't mind my jumping in, but I would expect that Gonzalez will basically continue eroding individual rights as Ashcroft did. What will be interesting is to see how the Justice Dept works with Cuban and Mexican illegal aliens, as, if Gonzalez takes a hard stand that will hurt Pres Bush, and the GOP, in getting the Hispanic vote.

So, there is a risk in having a Hispanic AG, as well as a way to get more Hispanics to vote Republican.

The "Wrong" Hispanic.. LOL! Whaa he doesn't agree with ME!!

That's right folks, we only freed the slaves to get blacks to vote for us.. that worked out smashingly didn't it? It's all a ruse.

I don't think Bush cares which hispanic he appoints to whatever, just so it looks like he has a little bit for everybody.Big deal, it will be four years more of indecisions.

James,
an interesting comment and keep jumping. I am interested to see how this administration handles illegal immigrants from Mexico (that is if they handle it at all) and whether they grant them any legal status whatsoever (considering they run the economy of California). I would hope Mr. Gonazalez can find a humane way to deal with the issue.

With over 50 percent of legal immigrants against those here illegally he might bring a good argument to Bush on this issue. Out here in California we are dying for the federal Gov. to help bail out this state as we are bending financially. Hospitals are closing, trama centers are closing, schools are bulging. The worst thing is that these children of immigrants are not learning the english language. These kids spend the whole rest of the day in an hispanic culture with no emphasis on the english language. I trust that this man knows the values of this country and he will want Hispanics being succesful as he has found this country. I trust Bush on this appointment. I drinky the Koolade. California and the other 5 affected states will be all over Bush on these immigration issues. House Republicans are feeling free to oppose him as we are seeing on this Intelligence Bill.
